Preventive Dentistry

Preventive DentistryPreventative dental services are an important component of your oral health. Our dentists are here to offer you those services to help you keep your oral health care on track, but it is important for you to keep your regularly scheduled biannual appointments to ensure oral health too. At these appointments we will not only provide you with a dental cleaning, but also evaluate your entire mouth for the signs of any impending diseases or issues that may require treatment. The earlier that you begin treatment, the less invasive the entire process will be in the end.

The dental exam is painless, yet vitally important. This is when we determine if you are showing any signs of disease, whether tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer. We will inspect all areas of your teeth, mouth, gums, neck, and face for any issues that need to be explored further. This is the time to let us know about any changes or complaints that you may have about your oral health so we can inspect those areas in detail.

There is nothing like that clean, smooth feeling of a professional dental cleaning! Our dental hygienists are gentle, caring, and thorough, leaving you with shiny teeth that are free from bacteria, plaque, and tartar, which means a decreased chance of tooth decay and gum disease - both of which compromise your oral health.

Some patients worry about exposure to x-rays, but rest assured that we use every precaution necessary to keep you safe. We use digital x-rays which significantly reduce your exposure to radiation. Periodic x-rays are an important component of your dental exam as they allow us a more in-depth look into your mouth and may help us see issues that are not able to be seen with the naked eye.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatment is important for those patients that do not receive enough fluoride in their daily diet. It is also important for those patients that have diminished saliva production, whether due to an illness or prescribed medication. Any of these reasons could diminish your fluoride consumption and harm your teeth. Our fluoride treatment is painless, yet can save you from tooth decay down the road.

Oral Cancer Screening

The oral cancer screening is also a vital part of the dental exam. During this portion of the exam the doctor will check inside and outside your mouth for any lumps or suspicious areas, this includes your gums, cheeks, and throat. Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers, yet is also one that is highly treatable in its earliest stages. Oral cancer typically does not show obvious signs in its earliest stages, which is why it is vital to let our staff examine your mouth for any signs that we may notice.

Gum and Periodontal Disease

Your preventative dental services also include an exam for gum and periodontal disease. Just like oral cancer, the earlier that gum disease is discovered, the more treatable it is. If we notice bleeding or swollen gums, bacteria below the gum line, or shifting teeth, we will discuss treatment options with you to help you get your gum disease under control right away. Untreated gum disease can be detrimental to your overall health.

Oral Hygiene Instructions

At our office, we pride ourselves on keeping our patients informed and educated, which is why we will always discuss your oral hygiene habits and go over instructions to help keep your teeth as healthy as possible. If you ever have any questions or concerns, do not be afraid to ask us - we want to help you keep your teeth in optimal health too!

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative Dentistry Restorative dentistry helps keep your natural teeth as well as provide viable replacement teeth, should the need arise. We use quality materials and a highly trained staff to ensure your comfort and a successful outcome to every restorative dentistry procedure we provide, which includes fillings, crowns, bridges, partial dentures, implant restorations, and simple extractions.

Dental Fillings

Tooth decay happens and when it does, dental fillings are placed to keep the structure of the tooth. We offer a wide variety of options when filling your tooth including traditional amalgam fillings as well as composite fillings, which is a tooth colored material that blends in with the rest of your teeth. Dental fillings ensure the health of your decayed tooth as we remove the decay and replace it with the filling that allows you to use your tooth as you normally would prior to the decay.

Dental Crowns

Sometimes a tooth suffers extensive damage, whether due to tooth decay, infection, or trauma and cannot be repaired. Because our goal is to help you keep your natural teeth intact, we offer dental crowns, which are a simple way to allow you to keep the roots of your teeth, while replacing the top (crown of the tooth) with a crown. The crown mimics the size and shape of your surrounding teeth and is strong enough to withstand almost everything that your natural teeth could handle, leaving you with a solid replacement for your affected tooth without the risk of excessive bone loss or shifting teeth.

Dental Bridges

Missing teeth can be unsightly as well as difficult to handle when it comes to talking and chewing. Dental bridges help to "bridge the gap" by placing artificial teeth in the middle of your healthy teeth. The bridge relies on your healthy teeth that are surrounding it to serve as anchors and the crowns serve as your new teeth. Dental bridges are a good option for tooth replacement because they work with the shape of your mouth, making talking and eating just as easy as it was before you were missing any teeth.

Partial Dentures

When you are missing a few teeth in a row, we offer partial dentures to help make talking, chewing, and even smiling easier. Partial dentures are a convenient solution to missing teeth; they provide you with a partial set of teeth that are removable for cleaning in order to ensure that your mouth stays healthy and free from decay or infection. The white teeth are held in place on a pink base, which is meant to match the tone of your natural gums, making it look as good as possible.

Implant Restoration

Implants permanently replace missing teeth by surgical attachment to the jawbone. After the implant is placed, and the required healing time has elapsed, the doctor will attach a crown to the implant, effectively replacing the missing tooth.

Dental implants provide several advantages over dentures and less permanent tooth replacement solutions:
•  They are very durable, nearly undetectable, and the closest thing to real teeth
•  They help prevent teeth from shifting to fill gaps
•  They improve bite and chewing ability
•  They reduce the sunken look caused by missing teeth

While implants can be more expensive than bridges and dentures, the long-term health benefits and a natural looking smile make them a smart long-term investment.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is more than the process of making your teeth whiter or straighter - oftentimes it is a necessary component of a person's oral health and serves more function than just cosmetic purposes. At our office, we are proud to provide our patients with a variety of cosmetic dental procedures including teeth whitening, bonding, and veneers.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening Discolored or stained teeth are nothing to be embarrassed about; for many people it is just a fact of life. Discoloration can occur as a result of changing hormones, aging, lifestyle habits, and diet. Once the staining occurs, it is difficult to remove them, unless they are on the very surface of your teeth and have not worked their way into the inner workings of your enamel. If we are unable to remove the stains with a professional cleaning, teeth whitening is often a plausible solution.

You are likely aware of the many teeth whitening products that are available at your local drug store, but they often do not provide the results you desire. They may help the staining a little bit, but you will see a better result with the professional whitening you can purchase in the office.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding has many uses - it can cover up stains, make fractures disappear, and fill a tooth with excessive decay. In essence, it is a procedure that makes your teeth look perfect again. Dental bonding is simply a resin that is applied to the surface of your teeth (typically the front teeth). Before we apply the resin, your teeth are filed with an abrasive material to give the resin something to adhere to - once your teeth are ready, the appropriate color resin is applied to your teeth, taking on the shape of your surrounding teeth so that it looks natural. Once the bonding is applied, we take special care to ensure that it is the right shape and size and that you can comfortably open and close your mouth. Once you are satisfied, we use a light to harden the material and make it a permanent part of your mouth.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are another popular form of cosmetic dentistry that we offer at our office. Veneers are a simple, non-invasive procedure that help you to achieve a whiter, straighter smile. Veneers are made of porcelain and are custom fit to the shape and size of your mouth. As long as your oral health is in good condition, you could be a good candidate for veneers. The process is completed in two appointments - the first appointment is when we take the impressions of your mouth to have the custom veneers made for you. During the second appointment, we apply the veneers, making sure that they are a perfect fit and provide the look that you desire.

Children's Dentistry

It is very important for your child to establish a good relationship with a dentist early in life. At our office, we are very gentle and caring with children to help them foster that relationship. Even if you have your own predisposed fears of dental work, it is paramount that it is not passed on to your children. The earlier you bring them in for regular appointments, the more natural dental work will become to them, and just like adults, preventative dental work is the least invasive and most productive for children.

If you have not made your child's first dental appointment yet, now is a great time to get started. It is never too late to get your child on the path to optimal oral health.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is used for multiple reasons, including making the patient comfortable during long or invasive procedures, to calm anxious patients, or to reduce severe gag reflexes. The type and intensity of the sedation we use depends on the situation, including patient preference, invasiveness of the procedure, and the level of anxiety of the patient. There are two different types of sedation we use in our office: oral sedation and intravenous sedation.

At our office, it is our goal to ensure the safety and comfort of every patient, which is why we offer different levels of sedation to meet the needs of every patient. If you have any questions about sedation dentistry, please feel free to call us at (503) 985-8945.
