Dental Fillings Tigard, OR

At Lisa Gitelson, DMD we understand the importance of quality dental restorations. Tooth decay will probably affect you at some point in your life and when it does, we are well equipped and experienced to ensure that you receive the best in restorative dental care. Fillings give your teeth the structural support they need after decay has been removed.

Having a Filling Placed

Cavities arise due to decay causing bacteria in the mouth. The reason we brush and floss is to routinely wash away these bacteria. Sometimes, bacteria are missed in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth and these decay causing bacteria are allowed to thrive.

After a while bacteria buildup can start to eat away at the enamel of the tooth. Once through the hard enamel, the decay can spread. When we find a cavity we will setup an appointment to place a filling.

The process of placing a filling is a straightforward one. First we will prepare the area around the tooth by injecting small amounts of numbing agent to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. The drill that we use will generate some heat and vibration in the tooth that can cause discomfort if the site is not numb. Once the site is numb, we will use the drill to remove the area affected by decay.

After we are through drilling the decay out of the tooth, a hole will be left behind that we must fill. We can finish the procedure with a number of different filling materials. Once the filling has been placed we will set it to make it a permanent fixture in your mouth.

Tooth Colored Fillings

Tooth colored fillings, commonly referred to as composite fillings, are the most popular filling material on the market today. We are able to match the exact color of your teeth by crafting a mixture of glass, plastic and a resin bonding agent. These materials provide a durable and long lasting, filling solution.

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam fillings, commonly called silver or metal fillings, are probably what you think of when you think of fillings. Amalgam fillings aren’t made of only silver, but a mix of a few different metals. They require a large portion of the tooth to be drilled in order to be successful. One of the best attributes amalgam fillings boast is their incredible strength. Typically, amalgam can only be used in the molars. Now, they have fallen out of favor due to their obvious and metallic appearance as well as the popularity of composite fillings.

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings are a beautiful and high quality solution to a few different dental issues. Gold is said to be the closest fit when it comes to matching the properties of a tooth. Gold inlays and onlays are not only works of art, they also feel just like natural teeth and last for decades.
