Dental Implant Restoration
Tigard, OR

Dental Implants by Tigard dentist, Lisa Gitelson, DMD in Tigard ORDentistry is a rapidly expanding science, the tools and technology being used today are a dramatic improvement from decades past, which is beneficial as people are living longer. Just like dentistry, dental implants have improved throughout history. Traditionally, dentists have assumed that people will have three sets of teeth in their lifetime, their primary teeth, their permanent teeth, and finally their dentures. Implants are changing your options, vastly improving your oral health while increasing your comfort, and providing you teeth that you can be proud of. Our team at Lisa Gitelson, DMD can replace your lost and missing teeth, replacing one, a few, or even all of your teeth. Dr. Lisa Gitelson can show you how dental implants can make a significant difference in your smile.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are the placement of a titanium post designed to serve as root system for a lost tooth. Following an extraction, or an oral injury, we can replace the tooth by first inserting a dental implant and then covering the implant with a dental device, either a dental crown, bridge, or denture device, depending on what is needed.

Tooth Implants
When a tooth is missing, we can not place a dental crown because there is no base, or structure, to attach the crown to. In some cases, a dental bridge can be placed, but bridges rely on neighboring teeth and do compromise their strength. Only an implant can permanently replace a missing tooth without interfering with the surrounding structures. This is because, we are not just replacing the tooth, but we are inserting a firm base for the false tooth to attach to. This base is the dental implant.

Dental implants involve a two part system, first the placement of the titanium rod or post. Dr. Lisa Gitelson surgical inserts the metal post directly into your jawbone. We use titanium because it is lightweight, strong, durable, and most importantly, biocompatible, meaning your body will not reject it. As your tissues heal, they will grow around the post, incorporating it in with your living bone, bonding the bone and metal together, this process is known as osseointegration. Once healed, the implant is a permanent part of your bone structure, it is firmly in place. The second part of the implant system is then the placing of a dental device over the implant. With the post firmly in place, we can then place a few different options over the implant. We can replace a single tooth with a dental crown, we can use the implant post to secure a dental bridge, or place multiple posts to firmly secure a denture device.

Why should I replace missing teeth?

Missing teeth will cause a cascade of negative effects to your oral health. When a tooth is lost, there is an immediate response from the supportive bone of sorption. Bone requires a constant stimulation of movement, and without the pressure of your tooth, it responds with immediate shrinkage. We have all seen people with tooth loss, we may not see the missing teeth, but we all note that the person has an older facial shape or appearance. What we perceive as an older look is the result of bone shrinkage from missing teeth.

Besides bone loss, missing teeth allows room for teeth to shift and move around in your mouth, which can result in changes in your bite. Changes in your bite can affect how you open and close your mouth, pain or discomfort in your jaw, or even ear pain and migraines.
