Reasons Why You May Need a Cavity Replaced

Reasons Why You May Need a Cavity ReplacedRegular appointments with a dentist can catch underlying problems before they get worse and allow a wider range of treatment and prevention options.

But even in the best of cases, a treatment may not be permanent, and need replacement. Here are some reasons why you may need your cavity fillings replaced.

Decay Still Happens
Meticulous care goes into making sure that as much as is possible of the unhealthy tissue and dead pulp is removed before a filling goes in, but teeth are a living part of your body, and over time the matter may continue to worsen. You may need to have a filling removed and replaced to allow us to tackle further decay that may have developed since your last visit.

Excessive Size
The filling may need regular replacement due to its size. Fillings are unfortunately less durable than real teeth, and the larger ones tend to be the ones that require the most frequent repair. Further, the larger the filling is, the less tooth it has to hold on to, which may cause it to not sit perfectly and necessitate adjustment as the original tooth continues to age to prevent “leaking” (gaps forming between the tooth and the filling that allow food particles and bacteria to build up.)

Dental Damage

Another common cause for filling replacement is damage or discoloration to the filling, whether due to accident or just routine wear and tear on the filling. If the filling is discolored, it may need a full replacement if filing away the top layer doesn't restore its luster. If it is chipped or broken, the whole filling needs replacement to ensure a comfortable and safe fit, without sharp edges that can damage the gums and cheeks, nor wiggly gaps that can allow food and germs to find their way in.

There are many reasons why your filling may need replacement, even after the original visit to get the cavity filled in the first place. If you suspect your filling is failing, or need treatment for cavities, please give us a call and we will happily help you set up an appointment.
