How Oral Sedation Can Keep Your Blood Pressure Down

Oral Sedation Lisa Gitelson, DMD OR 97224-3790There are many people who get stressed out when they have a dental procedure done.

For some, even a routine cleaning can cause stress. Any time you get stressed out, your blood pressure starts to rise.

This can lead to a number of issues, especially if you're often under stress. Hypertension can cause damage to your arteries, heart, brain, kidneys, and other parts of your body.

We want to do everything we can to make certain that you're not stressed out about your dental procedures. That's why we offer our patients, especially those who are frightened or concerned, the option of oral sedation.

What Is Oral Sedation?

Unlike some types of sedation that are injected or administered via IV, oral sedation is a pill you take. In most cases, you'll be given two pills. You take one the night before your procedure. This is similar to sleep aid medication and is designed to make sure you're well-rested.

The second pill is taken about an hour or so before the procedure. This pill helps relax you so you don't get stressed out. It keeps your blood pressure down, but it doesn't usually knock people out.

There are a few things to remember about oral sedation. While you may not be unconscious, your reaction time will be slowed. That means it's not safe to drive on your own. You may have difficulty understanding some instructions or providing information, too, so you'll want someone to handle all of the paperwork and booking your follow-up appointment.

These effects don't usually last that long, but you shouldn't expect to go to work or do much of anything for the rest of the day.

Oral sedation is an option for most of our patients, but there are some conditions that may make you an unsuitable candidate. If you have questions or want to book an appointment, call us today.
