Gum Disease Lisa Gitelson, DMD OR 97224-3790While gum disease (periodontitis) is common, it's also quite preventable.

Typically, gum disease is caused by poor oral hygiene. This is because it's essentially a bacterial inflammation that results in red, swollen, bloody gums.

Early Signs you may be Getting gum Disease

In the beginning, you probably won't experience more than some problems with your gums and a little pain in your mouth. Typically, the bleeding will occur when you're brushing, flossing, or eating hard food.

However, if you look really closely at your gums, you'll see that they're receding or pulling away from your teeth. This will cause your teeth to look longer than they did in the past. Your teeth will also grow loose and separate from one another, as well as your gums.

Advanced Signs you may be Getting gum Disease

As you look at your gums and teeth you may notice that you have some sores in your mouth. You'll also notice that there's pus between your gums and teeth. These are the reason you'll notice yourself having persistent bad breath.

Eventually you'll notice a change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite. If you already have dentures or you're wearing partials, you'll experience a change in how they fit.

This is why you want to notice how your teeth and gums are beforehand. Ultimately, gum disease can lead to tooth loss. It's also a risk factor for both heart and lung disease.
