Why Brushing in Circles is Better Than Straight Lines

Brushing Lisa Gitelson, DMD OR 97224-3790Every person has their own unique dental situation. Those with more sensitive gums may need a toothbrush with a softer bristle. While those with their teeth more spaced apart may need thicker toothbrush bristles.

One thing is clear, though. One of the most efficient ways to brush your teeth is to use circular motions. Brushing your teeth like you would cut a plank of wood with a saw is not only inefficient, but can be potentially dangerous, especially to your gums.

Why Brushing in a Circular Motion is the Best Way to Brush Your Teeth

Brushing in a circular motion will do what brushing in a straight motion or a sawing motion will not do. A circular motion can reach most, if not all of the nooks and crannies of your mouth, which allows it to take off the plaque and bacteria.

If you notice, circular brushing will let the plaque or brush between each tooth to rise up, making it easier to brush. Your gums will also appreciate a circular brushing motion, since the force is lesser and the range of brushing wider.

With sawing and straight motions, you will miss the plaque and bacteria in one area which you have not brushed. The second reason is because the gums will easily get irritated if the same spot is being brushed for some time.

Brushing your teeth may seem simple, but actually is a lot more complex than you think. Depending on the sensitivity of your gums, the spaces between your teeth and a lot of other factors, there is a different stroke that will work best for everyone.
