What to Expect During an Examination

When your dentist examines your mouth, they are doing more than just looking to see if there are any major issues with your teeth. That is only a small part of their examination.

They are also looking for any early signs of future problems, as it is much easier to treat a problem before it gets out of hand, than it is after it has already reached that point. Here are a few things to expect during your next dental exam.

What Your Dentist is Looking For

First, your dentist is looking for any obvious signs of problems with your teeth. They look for discoloration, cavities that can be seen, and chips or cracks in the teeth themselves.

Next, they are looking at the tissues of your mouth. This includes your tongue, the roof of your mouth, your cheeks, and your gums. They are looking for signs of disease in these areas, and they are checking the textures of these tissues.

Sometimes, the earliest signs of future problems start off as minor symptoms that most would overlook for quite some time, like a leathery patch inside their cheek or a small bump in the roof of their mouth.

Finally, your dentist is also looking for signs of issues with your teeth's overall condition. If you clench or grind your teeth, you could be wearing them down unevenly, or even causing problems that would need repairs. The sooner these problems can be caught, the better it is for you, and the easier the restorative procedures are for your dentist to complete.

If you want to find out more about what may be looked for during your dental exams, contact our office the next time you go in for one. They can pinpoint what they look for first, and explain it all as they go.
