Why Your Teeth Struggle When You Are On the Paleo Diet

The basis of the Paleo diet is being opportunistic of the things that hunters and gatherers would have had many eons ago.

This means eating natural foods that would have been around naturally for people in the Paleo era.

The problem with that theory is that there were some foods around back then that could be causing your teeth to struggle with staying healthy.

Being an Opportunistic Eater Doesn't Always Mean Eating Healthy Foods

Back then, eating what you came across was normal and expected. You found greens or meat, they became tonight's dinner. However, there were other foods that were also around at the time that fell into the same category.

One great example was nuts, namely acorns. Whenever hunters and gatherers came across acorns, they would gather them and the family would eat them along with the other foods that were around. This was basically like putting straight complex carbs on their teeth that were not properly cleaned, causing nothing but decay.

Today's Paleo diet consists of eating foods that would have naturally been around then, or foods that are naturally available today. Most of the diet does consist of vegetables, fruits, and meats, but nuts are often considered a viable option as well. This combination needs to be watched carefully and cleaned up after regularly.

While nuts are great snacks and even good for your teeth, you still need to make sure that you have brushed thoroughly after eating them. That is the only way to be able to protect your teeth from higher rates of decay, that some dentists are seeing as a result of the Paleo diet.
