Why Your Teeth Need Vitamin D

Vitamin D comes in vitamin form, but it also comes naturally from the sun. If you do not get enough vitamin D, you could end up very sick. You could also wind up with a higher chance of getting gum disease.

Since vitamin D is part of what helps you fight off inflammation, you are likely going to feel more of the inflammation that happens anywhere in your body if you are not getting enough of it, especially your mouth.

Getting Vitamin D is Important

Spending time outdoors gives you a good dose of vitamin D, and is safe so long as you consistently wear sun block to keep your skin safe. You can also get vitamin D in multi-vitamins that you should be taking anyway.

They help to keep not only your mouth, but your entire body healthier. However, it is also possible to get vitamin D through the foods you eat. The more vitamin D you can get, the better.

If you need to get extra vitamin D in your system, consider these food options. Fatty types of fish are a good source of vitamin D. As are many types of cheeses and egg yolks. You can also get a good amount of vitamin D when you eat cereals that have been fortified with it, which will help you fight back against gum disease at all its stages.

When your body lacks vitamin D, your teeth may suffer the most. Take the time to spend time outdoors as often as you can, even if it is just a walk around the block a few times a week. Eat healthy foods, and make sure to see your dentist regularly. That way, you can stave off most of the chances that you will succumb to gum disease at an early age, if at all.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about vitamin D's effects on your oral health.
