Getting Dental Sealants Isn't Only For Kids

Posted on 7/30/2016 by Boeckel
A young girl receiving a dental sealant.A common dental procedure for children is the application of sealants. These sealants are used to prevent cavities and tooth decay during the child's most vulnerable years.

Kids aren't the only ones susceptible to these problems; adults are just as much at risk.

For this reason, adults are excellent candidates for dental sealants as well.

How Do Dental Sealants Work?

Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings that are applied to the molars and premolars. This material is resistant to average, everyday chewing.

Molars have several deep grooves and crevices that debris can easily get stuck in and no amount of brushing can remove it. Sealants cover these crevices, helping to prevent food from getting stuck, thus aiding in tooth decay prevention.

Application is quick and easy and the sealants can last for years. First, the area is thoroughly cleaned. Then an antibacterial agent is applied. After it is rinsed off, the area is dried completely. The sealant is then applied and dried quickly.

Anyone Can Suffer Tooth Decay

While children are quite susceptible to cavities and tooth decay as their oral hygiene habits might not be the greatest, adults are vulnerable too.

Since your molars have crevices that your toothbrush's bristles cannot reach, even the most diligent brusher can suffer dental problems. Not only are you at risk for tooth decay, plaque can build up and cavities can form.

Prevention Is Key

Taking measures to prevent tooth decay is key to ensuring the health of your mouth. Anything you can do to stop oral issues is better than doing nothing at all.

Brushing, flossing and using mouthwash every day are excellent steps. Sealants are a further step that last a long time and help keep your daily routine easy.

Sealants are most often applied to the molars of children to help them prevent cavities and tooth decay during their most vulnerable years. Anyone is at risk, however, and adults can benefit from dental sealants just as much as children.
