Everyday Things to Help Reduce Dental Yellowing

Teeth Stain Lisa Gitelson, DMD OR 97224-3790When your teeth grow older or you've eaten lots of foods without properly caring for your teeth, they're bound to turn yellow.

This is something that simply happens over time.

However, there are some things that you can do to slow this process down. Unfortunately, though, you can't stop it from happening altogether.

How You Can Reduce The Staining

One of the most important things you can do is protect your teeth from trauma, including bruxism. When you're involved in sports you should always wear a mouth guard.

If you find yourself grinding and clenching your teeth at night, you need to also wear a mouth guard. Both activities will cause your teeth to prematurely age, shrink, and grow yellow.

However, what most people don't think about is that it's important not to hold a glass too near your mouth while at a cocktail party. It's surprising how many people get bumped and knock their teeth, making them turn yellow.

Besides protecting your teeth from injury, you also need to make sure your whole body is properly nourished. This includes eating plenty of good foods like cheese while avoiding the bad things like coffee, tea, berries, soy sauce, and spicy food.

Of course, you should also avoid tobacco products since nicotine stains your teeth too. You also need to get plenty of sleep and manage your stress levels properly. These things will slow down the aging process and thus reduce dental yellowing.

Another important thing that you can't overlook here is visiting us for routine dental checkups. We help you preserve the internal health of your teeth, which slows down the yellowing process too.

This is important because it's the dentin's (living tissue) intrinsic color that ages over time. During your appointment, you can also ask us about other things you can do too.
