Knowing When You Have a Fractured Tooth

Posted on 11/10/2016 by Boeckel
A man suffering from a fractured tooth.
A fractured tooth is not as easy to diagnose as one may think, at least some of the time.

If you are one of the lucky, or maybe it is unlucky, ones, you may notice the fracture when it occurs and be able to tell the dentist what you were doing when it happened.

However, if you are like most people, the fracture will not be something you are aware of right off the bat.

Symptoms of Having a Fractured Tooth

Typically, pain from a fractured tooth will come and go a bit. You may only notice pain when you eat or drink something that is extremely different than the temperature of your mouth, either very hot or very cold. However, you may also notice pain when you go to eat.

The shifting of your tooth as you chew can cause extreme pain to shoot through your tooth, leaving you wondering what in the world is going on. This can also happen as you release the bite pressure of chewing.
If you notice these symptoms, you need to contact your dentist immediately.

They need to take a look in your mouth, and likely perform an x-ray as well. From there, they should be able to determine which tooth is fractured, and if the tooth is able to be salvaged or not. If the fracture did not completely split the tooth, there is a good chance that it can be saved.

However, if your tooth fractured into two distinctly different pieces that split the tooth from crown to root, your tooth will likely have to be extracted.

A fractured tooth is serious and needs to be dealt with quickly so as not to cause an infection. If you suspect you have a fractured tooth, contact our office today so you can be seen.
