A box of chocolates inside a heart shaped valentines box.If you are feeling stressed out, you may be tempted to grab ice cream, fast food, or other junk item in order to ease your anxiety.

Unfortunately, these foods are bad news for both your oral health and your emotional wellbeing.

The next time you are feeling stressed, grab a snack of one of these items - the end result should be feeling a little better without worrying about having caused damage to your teeth.

Dark Chocolate

Some people stress-eat during times of tension, and chocolate is often one of the first things they grab. If you do want to have some chocolate when you are feeling stressed out, make sure you are choosing a dark variety with at least 70% cacao.

Dark chocolate will release anandamine, which is an important neurotransmitter that encourages feelings of happiness while reducing anxiety.

Sauerkraut is fermented, meaning it will work to reduce the unhealthy bacteria levels in your gut. There is actually a strong connection between gut health and brain health, so eating sauerkraut and other fermented foods like pickles and kimchee could help to improve your symptoms of depression while reducing your overall stress level.

When it comes to healthy foods, blueberries are one of the top, as they are packed full of antioxidants. Blueberries help your body to regulate stress responses and can also fight against free radicals that can cause a variety of health problems.

Blueberries are a great addition to any well-balanced breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and a handful also makes a good snack midday.

Kale and other leafy green vegetables have a ton of minerals and vitamins that help to regulate your cortisol levels while also providing nutrients for your teeth. Leafy greens stabilize dopamine and serotonin.
