Oral Sedation
Tigard, OR

sedation dentistry tigard orMany people struggle with dental anxiety. Some even struggle to the point of avoiding dental work out of concern that it will be frightening or painful. As a way to be able to help patients who struggle with dental anxiety, the option of oral sedation exists. If you want to find out how oral sedation could help you remain calm and come in to see the dentist more often, speak to us about our oral sedation options and we will be happy to explain your options to you. Here at Lisa Gitelson DMD and David Wilson DMD, we are more than happy to help figure out which oral sedation option would be best for you.

What Types of Sedation Are Out There?

There are currently three types of sedation available for dental anxiety. You can inhale sedation, such as if you were to breathe in nitrous oxide - this reduces a patient’s anxiety and often helps them feel less pain. You can get an IV of a sedative. This is for those with large, potentially painful procedures, or extreme dental anxiety. You can be conscious to some degree during IV sedation, but you are only slightly aware of what is going on around you. Finally, there is oral sedation. This allows you to be aware of what is going on and able to respond to what is happening in the room and your procedure. However, you are not likely to struggle with any anxiety or fear with this process.

What is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is when you take medication orally before your procedure. The length of time you must take the medication before the procedure depends on which medication you are given. However, it is required that you have transportation both to and from the office, to protect yourself and those around you while sedated. The medication, often a very small pill, begins to kick in before the procedure is started. It keeps you aware but easily distracted. You will likely feel very drowsy while the pill is actively in your system. Plus, oral sedation can give your body some form of amnesia once the process is done because you were so relaxed. It allows you to be aware of what went on, without the specific memory of enduring any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

When Oral Sedation is a Good Option

Oral sedation is a good option for patients who either have a level of anxiety that keeps them from coming in to see us or have a larger procedure in their future. It allows them to get the work done without the same negative potential that a non-sedated person may experience. This way, when the dental procedure is completed, the person can rest without the stress or anxiety that may otherwise have bothered them.
