What Options Can Reduce Jaw Pain?

Posted on 6/10/2017 by Boeckel
A woman suffering from jaw pain.
Are you struggling with jaw pain? If so, then there are options out there to help you deal with the pain. Jaw pain can be caused by a wide variety of problems.

Going in to see your dentist is the fastest way to the answer of what can be causing the pain, and the fastest route to the solution.

Until you are able to be seen by your dentist, there are a few things you can do to help minimize your pain.

Reducing Pain in Your Jaw

Putting ice on the outside of the jaw where it hurts for 20 minutes, then removing the ice for another 20 minutes, can significantly help. Some people respond better to heat, but until you know if an infection is what is causing your pain, most dentists recommend you use ice.

Taking anti-inflammatories can help alleviate jaw pain. Taking ibuprofen as directed on the bottle, on a schedule, often helps take the edge off of any pain in your jaw. Just make sure you follow the directions exactly, and never take more than is recommended.

If you commonly wake up with jaw pain, it may be due to bruxism. This is when you grind and clench your teeth, and it typically happens when you sleep. Taking care to rest your jaw is a great way to help reduce pain in your jaw, if this is the likely culprit of your pain.

The more you can rest and the sooner you are able to get in and get seen, the better. Your jaw will hurt less if you use it less. If the pain gets out of control, contact our office for an emergency appointment, or contact your physician to get seen. Infections in the jaw can cause your entire body to get sick, and are never worth the risk.
