How Your Tongue Can Ruin Your Breath

Posted on 5/10/2017 by Boeckel
A man suffering from severe dry mouth.
You brush your teeth every day. In fact, you even follow dental recommendations and brush twice a day. On top of that, you floss diligently once a day as well. You just can't understand why your breath is still bad. The truth is, your tongue can play a huge role.

Causes of Bad Breath

While neglecting your brushing and flossing routine is a major contributing factor in bad breath, it is not the only one. There are several other reasons your breath may not very fresh:

•  Dry mouth. A lack of saliva creates the perfect environment for oral bacteria to thrive.
•  Certain medications.
•  Allergies, illnesses, or infections.
•  Lifestyle habits, such as smoking or drinking.
•  The condition of your tongue.

How Your Tongue Plays a Role

Your tongue plays a rather large role in the quality of your breath. This is because your tongue is not a smooth surface. In fact, it contains many bumps and grooves.

Oral bacteria, being so small, can easily make themselves comfortable in these spaces. Not only that, but tiny food particles can also collect there, providing adequate food for bacteria to grow.

Conditions that contribute to dry mouth (such as smoking, drinking or simply dehydration), as well as infections can also affect the tongue, making it more susceptible to becoming an ideal environment for bacterial growth.

Cleaning Your Tongue

In most instances, the simple act of cleaning your tongue can help to clear up your unwanted case of foul breath. You can brush your tongue, or, for better results, use a special tool, known as a tongue scraper, after you have finished brushing and flossing. And a rinse with mouthwash will help to finish the job, rinsing away and killing any remaining bacteria that might be hanging around.

Your tongue plays a huge role in the quality of your breath. Cleaning it every day will greatly help. Contact our office to learn more.
