Prolonging the Life of a Dental Crown

The better you take care of your dental crown, the longer it is going to last. You should make sure to ask your dentist how to care for it properly when you are getting it placed.

There are a few things you can do to make sure it lasts as long as possible before it either falls out or has to be replaced due to age. Here are a few pointers to help your dental crown last.

How to Care for Your Dental Crown

You need to make sure you are caring for your dental crown in the same way that you should be caring for your teeth. Brushing thoroughly and flossing around it are necessary, just like you would your regular tooth. You need to also have the dentist check it at your six-month checkups.

When chewing, you need to take care to bite down normally, not excessively hard. Avoiding foods that require you to bite down extremely hard is recommended. Otherwise, if you are going to eat them, make sure to eat them on the other side of your mouth whenever possible.

Protecting your dental crown can also help it last longer. Do not grind your teeth or clench your jaw when you have a dental crown. If you do this, you need to speak with your dentist about a mouth guard to protect your tooth from excessive wear. You should also use a mouth guard if you participate in any type of contact sport. Injury is an easy way to lose a dental crown, so you need to make sure you are safe.
