If You Lost All Your Teeth, Would Your Mouth Be Healthy Enough for Implants?

A diagram of a dental implant inside a patients jaw.Dental implants are an incredibly good way to replace missing teeth because they look, act, and feel just like your regular teeth once did.

They are strong and can last you the rest of your life if you take care of them properly from when they are put in your mouth, on.

However, getting dental implants requires that metal posts get placed in your jaw bone.

If your jaw is not healthy enough for implants, you may be stuck with dentures instead.

What You Need in Order to Get Dental Implants

There are a few specific criteria that you need to meet in order to be able to get dental implants. First, you cannot be a smoker.

Smoking causes a wide variety of problems with the health of your mouth, and is almost a guarantee that your implant posts will not heal properly or secure themselves into your jaw securely enough to work.

Next, you must not also be going through active gum disease at the time of implantation.

You need to make sure that you have gone through dental treatment before you can get implants placed as that can quickly infect your implants if you are not careful.

Finally, you must have enough jaw bone to be able to securely hold each post. If you have already gone through deterioration of your jaw bone, you may need to have a bone graft prior to getting implants.

If your dentist thinks you would be a good candidate for dental implants, he or she will tell you so and get the process started for you.

However, you need to make sure that you listen closely to what your dentist wants you to do so that your implants have the best chances of successfully working with your mouth long-term.
