You Can Feel Relaxed at the Dentist without Medication

Posted on 6/20/2016 by Boeckel
A woman speaking with her dentist about her dental anxiety.Do you feel anxiety about going to the dentist, but don't want to take any medication? While sedation dentistry is advancing every day and is perfectly safe, if for some reason you don't want to take advantage of this option, there are a few tips that you can try in order to feel more relaxed throughout your dental appointment.

Use Relaxation Techniques
If you are feeling nervous at the dentist, try to use some relaxation techniques to de-stress. Slow, deep breaths will help to slow your breathing and heart rate. You could also imagine yourself somewhere relaxing, such as at a beach or on a bench in your favorite park.

Talking to a therapist might also help you to develop some relaxation techniques that you can use not only at the dentist, but in your everyday life when you are feeling stressed out.

Plan Ahead
It can be extremely useful to plan ahead when it comes to your dental appointment. To ease your anxiety, make sure that you schedule your appointment for a time when you won't feel rushed or stressed.

Typically, this will be in the morning, and you should avoid sugary foods or caffeine beforehand -they could make you feel jittery.

Try Acupuncture

The ancient practice of acupuncture is still being used for a variety of reasons. It involves the insertion of tiny needles at specific points in the body, and it can potentially ease pain after oral surgery. Before pursuing this method, make sure you talk to your dentist.

Talk to Your Dentist

If you are feeling nervous about your appointment, talk to your dentist. He may have some tips or strategies that can help to ease your anxiety, such as allowing you to listen to music throughout your procedure.
